In collaboration with NVIDIA and the American Society for Deaf Children, Hello Monday/DEPT® addressed the critical lack of accessible American Sign Language (ASL) resources—a gap that risks language deprivation for the 90% of deaf children born to hearing parents. To solve the problem of passive video learning, the team created Signs, a browser-based, AI-powered platform that uses computer vision to track hand movements and provide real-time feedback via a 3D avatar. This free, interactive tool not only gamifies the learning process but also crowdsources a massive open-source dataset to improve future AI recognition. The project launched with zero paid media yet garnered over 1 billion earned impressions, reached 20 million people in its first week, and facilitated the learning of 20,000 signs in just 10 days, successfully democratizing ASL education while fueling the next generation of inclusive technology.
