Cactus has served as AOR for Colorado Lottery for 18 years. In agency years, that's basically a geological era. And typically, that kind of agency-client longevity becomes a recipe for dull work. But ours just keeps getting sharper.
The lottery category has a problem. Most of the work looks the same—generic excitement and prizes dangled like bait. Forgettable by design. Additionally, state lotteries promote such a wide assortment of games throughout the year (from state-specific draw games, national games like Powerball, Mega Millions, Cash 5 and Pick 3, to a seemingly endless list of scratch-offs) that it’s easy for a lottery brand’s messaging to feel like a scattershot of disconnected executions.
So, for Colorado Lottery, a state with one of the strongest regional identities in the country, we saw a different way in. We developed a creative platform that enables the brand to talk about every game it offers within the same world—a heightened, funnier, slightly larger-than-life version of Colorado that somehow feels more like Colorado than the actual Colorado.
We call it Winning Country. It’s a place that’s home to a Colorado state of mind where everyday people stumble into extraordinary luck and handle it in very human, very funny, very Colorado ways. And at the center of it all is Daniel. He’s rugged, easygoing, and hard not to love. He treats absurd luck with curiosity, a little understatement, and zero urgency to impress. Coloradans don’t just remember him; they recognize a little bit of themselves in him.
The creative does what the best brand work always does: it earns attention before it asks for anything. In “Bedazzled,” a man tries desperately to hide his million-dollar Gemstones Scratch win from his friends (while wearing a gem-encrusted suit, gem-encrusted boots, and driving a gem-crusted Jeep)
